She was the one who gave up her allotted day to ʿĀʾishah, out of consideration for the heart of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, after she herself had lost interest in marital relations. (1)
She transmitted several hadiths, and al-Bukhari includes some of them in his collection.
Among those who related from her are Ibn ʿAbbās and Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī.
She passed away in Madinah toward the end of ʿUmar’s caliphate.
Hishām ibn ʿUrwah narrated from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
“I never saw a woman whose place I would rather have been in than Sawdah. Although she had a sharp temper, when she grew old she ceded her day with the Prophet ﷺ to ʿĀʾishah.” (2)
(1) Al-Bukhari records the report in two places: 9/274, Book of Marriage, "Chapter: A wife may cede her day to her co-wife," and 5/161, Book of Gifts. The hadith, narrated from Aisha, states that Sawda bint Zamʿa donated her allotted day to Aisha, so the Prophet would spend both Sawda’s and Aisha’s days with Aisha; the Gifts version adds at the end: "she did so to seek the pleasure of the Messenger of Allah."
Muslim also transmits it (no. 1463) from Aisha: when Sawda grew old she assigned her day with the Messenger of Allah to Aisha, saying, "Messenger of Allah, I have given my day with you to Aisha." Abu Dawud (2135) records—through Ahmad b. Yunus → ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Abi al-Zinad → Hisham b. ʿUrwa → his father—that Aisha said, "My nephew, the Messenger of Allah never preferred one of us over another in the apportioning of his time among us." He seldom stayed overnight with Sawda, and when Sawda became elderly and feared that the Messenger of Allah might divorce her she said, "Messenger of Allah, my day belongs to Aisha," which he accepted. Aisha added: "Concerning this—and similar cases—Allah Most High revealed (Q 4:128) wa-in imraʾatun khāfat min baʿlihā nushūzan (If a woman fears ill-treatment or desertion from her husband…)."
Ibn Saʿd (8/53) follows the same wording through al-Waqidi → Ibn Abi al-Zinad with a connected chain; Saʿid b. Mansur transmits it from Ibn Abi al-Zinad as a mursal report (without mentioning Aisha). Al-Tirmidhi (3040) gives a connected version from Ibn Abbas, and ʿAbd al-Razzaq relates it from Maʿmar in similar terms. Al-Hafiz concludes that the convergence of these chains shows Sawda feared divorce, hence her gift.
Fa-rakat: her inclination toward men had diminished.
(2) Muslim (1463), Book of Breast-feeding, "Chapter: The permissibility of a wife donating her turn to her co-wife."
Her phrase "fī mislākihā" means she wished to emulate Aisha’s conduct and manner.
