(1) i.e. exceptionally attractive; the word is formed on an intensive morphological pattern. Al-Zamakhshari remarks that the pattern faʿal functions as a hyperbolic form of faʿil, as in karim/karam and kabir/kabar, while faʿʿal (with the middle consonant doubled) is even more emphatic. (2) Reported by Ibn Hisham, al-Sirah, 2/294–295, from Ibn Ishaq, and from him by Ahmad, 6/277: Muhammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr related from ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, from ʿAishah, who said: When the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, distributed the captives of Banu al-Mustaliq, Jawayriyah bint al-Harith fell by lot to Thabit b. Qays b. al-Shammas—or to a paternal cousin of his—and she entered into a manumission contract (mukataba) with him. She was a woman of sweet, striking beauty; no one who saw her remained unaffected. She came to the Messenger of Allah seeking his help to fulfil her contract. ʿAishah said: By Allah, the moment I saw her at the door of my room I disliked her, knowing that the Messenger of Allah would notice in her what I had noticed. She entered and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, I am Jawayriyah daughter of al-Harith b. Abi Dirar, the chief of his people. I have suffered a misfortune known to you: I fell by lot to Thabit b. Qays b. al-Shammas—or to a paternal cousin of his—and I have made a contract for my freedom with him. I have come to ask your help in paying it, and to marry you.’ He replied, ‘I have done so.’ News spread that the Messenger of Allah had married Jawayriyah. People said, ‘They are the in-laws of the Messenger of Allah,’ and released the captives they held. ʿAishah said: Because of his marriage to her, one hundred households of Banu al-Mustaliq were set free. I know of no woman who brought greater blessing to her people than she did.
