The Prophet ﷺ had married her, yet he deferred assigning her a regular turn among the wives whose turns he postponed (1).
39 – Juwayriyah, Mother of the Believers, daughter of al-Ḥārith ibn Abī Dirār al-Muṣṭaliqiyya* (ʿ)
She was taken captive on the day of the expedition of al-Muraysīʿ, in the fifth year AH. Her original name was Barrah, which was later changed (2), and she was counted among the most beautiful of women.
She came to the Prophet ﷺ asking for assistance to redeem herself, whereupon he said, “Shall I offer you something better than that? I will marry you.”
She embraced Islam and he married her; he then set free the captives from her tribe (3). Her father was a respected and obeyed chieftain.
Among those who narrated from her are Ibn ʿAbbās, ʿUbayd ibn al-Sabbāq, Kurayb, Mujāhid, Abū Ayyūb Yaḥyā ibn Mālik al-Azdī, and others.
