It was also transmitted from him by ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAmr.
Al-Wāqidī narrated: Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb ibn ʿUtbah told us, from ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Abī ʿAwn, that al-Nuʿmān ibn Abī al-Jawn al-Kindī came as a Muslim and said, “Messenger of Allah, shall I not marry you to the most beautiful unmarried woman among the Arabs? She herself desires you.” The Prophet therefore married her for a bridal gift of twelve-and-a-half uqiyahs (1). Al-Nuʿmān said, “Do not stint her in the dowry.” He replied, “I have not given anyone a dowry larger than this.”
He then sent Abū Usayd with him; when the two reached her, she was seated and granted him permission to enter. Abū Usayd said, “The wives of the Messenger of Allah are not to be seen by men.” So I placed the bride in a litter (2) on a camel and set off with her until I lodged her among the Banū Sāʿidah.
The women entered to welcome her, then went out and spoke of her beauty, and word of it spread. One of the women came in again and said to her, “You are now a queen. If you wish to win the favor of the Messenger of Allah, then when he approaches you say, ‘I seek refuge in Allah from you,’ for he greatly desires you” (3).
Ibn Abī ʿAwn also related that the Prophet married this Kindiyyah in the ninth year, in the month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal.
Al-Wāqidī said: Ibn Abī al-Zinād narrated to us, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, that al-Walīd wrote to him asking, “Did the Messenger of Allah marry the sister of al-Ashʿath?” He replied, “No—”
