Al-Zuhri relates—on the authority of Anas: “I once saw Zaynab, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, wearing a striped cloak of silk.” (1)
She died at the beginning of the eighth year. (2)
ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal transmits—through Ḥafṣah, from Umm ʿAṭiyyah—who said:
“When Zaynab, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, passed away, he instructed us: ‘Wash her an odd number of times—three or five—and in the final washing add camphor, or a little camphor. When you have finished washing her, inform me.’ When we had washed her, he handed us his waist-wrapper and said, ‘Shroud her in this.’” (3)
29 – Ruqayyah, daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
Her mother was Khadijah.
(1) Its chain of transmission is sound; Ibn Saʿd recorded it, 8/33–34, through Saʿid b. Mansur — ʿAbd Allah b. al-Mubarak — Maʿmar — al-Zuhri — Anas. Al-Hakim, 4/45–46, declared it authentic and al-Dhahabi concurred.
(2) Recorded by Ibn Saʿd, 8/34, through the isnad of al-Waqidi.
(3) The isnad is sound. Ibn Saʿd narrates it, 8/34, and Muslim (939/40) through ʿAsim al-Ahwal — Hafsa bt. Sirin — Umm ʿAtiyya. Malik includes it in the Muwattaʾ, 1/222 (Funerals: Washing the Deceased); al-Bukhari, 3/102, 105 (Funerals: Washing the Deceased) nos. 1254, 1258, 1260; Muslim (939); Abu Dawud (3142); al-Nasaʾi, 4/28–29; and Ibn Majah (1458), all via Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani — Muhammad b. Sirin — Umm ʿAtiyya. Al-Bukhari also transmits it under nos. 167, 1255, 1256 and 1263, and al-Tirmidhi (990) through Hafsa bt. Sirin — Umm ʿAtiyya.
al-hiqo denotes the waist-wrapper (izar); its plurals are hiqi, ahq and ahaqa. The basic sense of hiqo is the part of the body where the izar is tied, and by extension the cloth itself. The Prophet’s instruction “ashʿirnaha iyyah” means “make it her shiar,” i.e. the garment directly touching her body. Shiʿar is the inner garment, while dithar is worn over it; hence his well-known statement to the Ansar: “You are my shiʿar and other people are my dithar.”
