did you see?”
She answered, “I saw a Jewish woman among Jewish women.” (1)
ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār said:
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from Khaybar with Safiyyah, he lodged her, and the women of the Anṣār heard of her beauty and came to look at her. ʿĀʾishah had covered her face until she entered, yet he recognized her. When she left, he came out and said, “How did you find her?” She replied, “I saw a Jewish woman.” He said, “Do not say that, for she has embraced Islam.” (2)
Makhramah ibn Bukayr narrated from his father, from Ibn al-Musayyib, who said:
Safiyyah arrived wearing gold earrings. She gave some of them to Fāṭimah and to the other women who were with her. (3)
Al-Ḥasan ibn Mūsā al-Ashyab related to us: Zuhayr narrated to us; Kinānah said:
I was leading Safiyyah’s mule when she went to avert harm from ʿUthmān. Al-Ashthar met her and struck the face of her mule until it swerved. She said, “Leave me—do not let this man expose me!” She then laid planks from her house to the house of ʿUthmān and would carry water and food across them. (4)
Al-Wāqidī said: Muḥammad ibn Mūsā narrated to us, from ʿUmārah ibn al-Muhājir, from Āminah bint Qays al-Ghifāriyyah, who said:
I was one of the women who escorted Safiyyah on the day she was taken in to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I heard her say, “I had not yet reached seventeen years of age the day I entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” (5)
