It is said that she passed away in 36 AH, and it is also said that she died in 50 AH (1). Safiyyah was known for her patience and dignity.
Maʿn transmitted, on the authority of Hishām ibn Saʿd, from Zayd ibn Aslam:
While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was suffering the illness in which he died, Safiyyah bint Huyayy said, “By Allah, O Prophet of Allah, I would have wished that what you are enduring were upon me instead.” The other wives exchanged glances at her, and when he noticed them he said, “Rinse out your mouths.” They asked, “For what reason?” He replied, “Because of the way you were signaling about her. By Allah, she is truthful.” (2)
Sulaymān ibn al-Mughīrah narrated, through Ḥumayd ibn Hilāl:
Safiyyah said, “I dreamed that I—and this man who claims that Allah has sent him—were shaded by an angel spreading his wings over us.” The people rebuffed her interpretation and spoke to her sternly about it (3).
Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated, from Thābit, from Anas:
The Prophet ﷺ obtained Safiyyah from Dihyah in exchange for seven captives, then entrusted her to Umm Sulaym so she could prepare herself, adorn herself, and complete her waiting period with her. His wedding feast consisted of clarified butter, dried curds, and dates; the ground was cleared into small circles, leather mats were laid down, and that food was placed upon them (4).
