—whereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, “They are yours.” Yet she went on repeating, “No, by Allah…,” and he reported the remainder of the narration. ⦗1⦘
Al-Walīd related: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Namir narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī; Ḥarmalah, the client of Usāmah ibn Zayd, narrated to me that while he was sitting with Ibn ʿUmar, al-Ḥajjāj ibn Ayman entered and performed a prayer in which he did not complete its bowing or its prostration. Ibn ʿUmar called him and said, “Do you imagine you have prayed? You have not prayed—go back and repeat your prayer.” When he turned away, Ibn ʿUmar asked, “Who is that man?” I replied, “Al-Ḥajjāj ibn Ayman, the son of Umm Ayman.” He said, “Had the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seen him, he would have loved him.” ⦗2⦘
Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated from Thābit, from Anas: When the Prophet ﷺ passed away, Umm Ayman wept. She was asked, “Do you weep?” She replied, “By Allah, I knew he would die; but I weep because the revelation that used to come down to us from heaven has now ceased.” ⦗3⦘
Qays ibn Muslim also transmitted, from Ṭāriq, who said: When ʿUmar was killed, Umm Ayman wept,
(1) Its chain of transmission is sound. Ibn Saʿd also cites it (8/225) and completes the wording with: “or like what she said.” He further states: “You have such-and-such,” referring to the amount he had given her—I think he said: “ten times as much, or something close to ten times as much,” or words to that effect. Al-Bukhari recorded it (7/316) in the Book of Expeditions, Chapter: The Prophet’s return from al-Ahzab and his march to Banu Qurayza; Muslim likewise recorded it (no. 1771, 71) in the Book of Jihad and Expeditions, Chapter: Returning the gifts of the Muhajirun to the Ansar, both through the chain of al-Muʿtamir ibn Sulayman, from his father, from Anas.
(2) Reported by Ibn Saʿd (8/225) through Sulayman ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Dimashqi from al-Walid; all its transmitters are trustworthy, and the two additional phrases are taken from this version.
(3) Reported by Ibn Saʿd (8/226) with an authentic chain; also by Muslim (no. 2454) in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions, Ibn Majah (no. 1635) in the Book of Funerals, and Abu Nuʿaym in Hilyat al-awliyaʾ (2/68) — all through Sulayman ibn al-Mughira ibn Thabit, from Anas, who relates: After the death of the Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr said to ʿUmar, “Come with me to visit Umm Ayman as the Messenger of Allah used to visit her.” When they arrived she wept. They asked, “Why are you crying? What is with Allah is better for His Messenger.” She replied, “I am not weeping because I do not know that what is with Allah is better for His Messenger, but I weep because revelation has ceased to descend from the sky.” Her words moved both of them to tears.
