Al-Wāqidī narrated: “Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh related to us, on the authority of al-Zuhrī, who said:
When Abū Sufyān arrived in Medina while the Prophet ﷺ was preparing to march on Mecca, he tried to persuade him to extend the armistice, but the Prophet paid him no heed. Abū Sufyān therefore left and went in to his daughter, Umm Ḥabībah. When he moved to sit on the Prophet’s bedding, she folded it up so that he could not sit on it.
He said, ‘My daughter, did you move the bedding away from me, or me away from the bedding?’
She replied, ‘This is the bedding of the Messenger of Allah, and you are a defiled idolater.’
He said, ‘My daughter, what an evil has come upon you since you left me!’ (1)
ʿAtāʾ said: Ibn Shawwāl informed me that Umm Ḥabībah told him the Messenger of Allah had ordered her to leave Jamʿ (Muzdalifah) during the night. (2)
Al-Wāqidī also reported: Abū Bakr ibn Abī Sabrah told me, from ʿAbd al-Majīd ibn Suhayl, from ʿAwf ibn al-Ḥārith, who said: I heard ʿĀʾishah say, ‘When Umm Ḥabībah was on her deathbed she sent for me and said, “Between us there has been what normally occurs between co-wives; may Allah forgive me and you for all of it.” I replied, “May Allah forgive you for all of that and release you from any blame.” She said, “You have delighted me—may Allah delight you.” She then sent for Umm Salamah and said the same to her.’
