forgive us and forgive him, and grant me after him a worthy successor.’
I said those words, and Allah replaced him for me with Muhammad (1) ﷺ.
Muslim relates in his Ṣaḥīḥ (2) that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣafwān visited Umm Salamah during the caliphate of Yazīd.
Ismāʿīl ibn Nashīṭ also transmitted from Shahr, who said: ‘I came to Umm Salamah to console her over al-Ḥusayn (3).’
Among the texts that testify to the merit of the Mothers of the Believers is the Almighty’s statement: ‘O wives of the Prophet, you are not like any other women, provided you are God-fearing…’—up to His words: ‘…establish the prayer, give the alms, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah only desires to remove impurity from you, People of the Household, and to purify you completely. And remember what is recited in your homes of Allah’s revelations and of wisdom.’ [al-Aḥzāb 32–34].
(1) Chain of transmission: sound. Also recorded by Ahmad, Musnad, 6:291, 306; Muslim, no. 919, Book of Funerals, “What to say to the sick”; Abu Dawud, no. 3115, Book of Funerals, “Recommended words in the presence of the deceased”; al-Tirmidhi, no. 977, Book of Funerals, “Prompting the dying person and supplicating for him”; al-Nasaʾi, 4:4-5, Book of Funerals, “The frequency of death”; and Ibn Majah, no. 1447, Book of Funerals, “What is to be said to the sick when death approaches” – all through various chains from al-Aʿmash, from Abu Waʾil Shaqiq b. Salamah, from Umm Salamah. She related that the Messenger of Allah said: “When you are present with a sick person or a deceased one, speak good words, for the angels say ʾamin to what you utter.” She added: “When Abu Salamah died, I went to the Prophet and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, Abu Salamah has died.’ He replied, ‘Say: Allahumma ighfir li wa lahu wa aʿqibni minhu ʿuqba hasana (O Allah, forgive me and him, and grant me in exchange for him a good successor).’ I said it, and Allah gave me someone better than him—Muhammad himself.”
“aʿqibni” means “replace me, compensate me,” i.e., grant me, in return for him, a righteous substitute.
(2) Muslim, no. 2882, Book of Trials and Portents of the Hour, “The earth’s swallowing of the army that marches against the House,” transmitted through ʿUbayd Allah b. al-Qubtiyya: al-Harith b. Abi Rabiʿa and ʿAbd Allah b. Safwan, with me accompanying them, entered upon Umm Salamah, Mother of the Believers, and asked her about the army that will be swallowed up—this occurred during the days of Ibn al-Zubayr. She said: The Messenger of Allah declared, “Someone will seek refuge in the House; an expeditionary force will be sent after him, and when they reach the barren land (al-Baydaʾ), the earth will swallow them.” I asked, “Messenger of Allah, what about a person among them who objects to what they are doing?” He said, “He too will be swallowed up with them, but on the Day of Resurrection he will be raised according to his intention.”
