am a woman whose years have already advanced, I am the mother of orphans, I am highly jealous, and you, Messenger of Allah, marry a number of women.”

He said, “As for jealousy, Allah will remove it. As for your age, I am older than you. And as for your orphans, they are under the care of Allah and His Messenger.”

So I consented, and he married me. (1)

Abu Nuʿaym narrated: ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ayman told us, and Abu Bakr ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith related to me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proposed to Umm Salamah. She said, “I have three traits: I am old, I have a nursing child, and I am jealous …” — the rest of the report. (2)

Al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Ḥanṭab said:
“The foremost widow of the Arabs entered upon the leader of the Muslims at the beginning of the night as a bride, and by the last part of the night she was up grinding grain”—meaning Umm Salamah.

Mālik narrated, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī Bakr, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Abī Bakr ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from his father, who said:
“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ consummated the marriage with Umm Salamah, he said, ‘Your people have suffered no loss of honor because of you. If you wish, I will stay seven nights with you and seven with them—meaning his other wives—or, if you prefer, three nights and then resume the normal rotation.’

She said, ‘Three.’” (3)
