Umm Rumaan asked, “And what is that?”
The woman replied, “My son(1) is among those who have been spreading the report.”
She said, “What report is that?”
The woman answered, “Such-and-such.”
ʿAʾishah then asked, “Did the Messenger of Allah hear about it?”
She said, “Yes.”
ʿAʾishah asked, “And Abu Bakr?”
She said, “Yes.”
At that, ʿAʾishah collapsed unconscious. She did not revive until she was burning with a fever that made her shiver, so I covered her with her clothes. The Prophet ﷺ came and said, “What is the matter with her?”
I replied, “Messenger of Allah, a fever with shivering(2) has seized her.”
He said, “Perhaps it is because of some talk that is being circulated?”
I said, “Yes.”
She then sat up and declared, “By Allah, if I swear an oath you will not believe me, and if I speak you will not excuse me. My situation and yours is like that of Jacob and his sons: ‘Allah is the One whose help is sought against what you allege.’ ”
She said, “He left without saying anything.”
Then Allah revealed her vindication.
She said, “All praise is due to Allah—praise to no one else, and not to your praise.(3)”
Authentic, singular.
