who said, “Your Lord conveys to you greetings of peace and says: If you wish, be a servant-Prophet; and if you wish, be a king-Prophet.” I looked toward Gabriel, and he signalled to me to humble myself, so I replied, “Rather, a servant-Prophet.”
After that, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ never ate while reclining; he would say, “I eat as a servant eats, and I sit as a servant sits.” (1)
This is a fair, singular hadith. We could not hope to receive a report from the Mother of the Believers with a chain any closer than this.
I read this before Ibn ʿAsākir, who related it from Abū Rūḥ; Tamīm informed us; Abū Saʿd narrated to us; Ibn Ḥamdān informed us; Abū Yaʿlā narrated to us; Abū Maʿmar Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; from ʿAlī ibn Hāshim; from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah; from Bakr ibn Wāʾil; from al-Zuhri; from ʿUrwah; from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never struck a woman, nor did he ever strike one of his servants, nor did he ever raise his hand against anything, except when striving in the path of Allah. He never took revenge for any personal affront; he would only seek retribution when the sacred limits of Allah were violated. (2)
