Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

This ḥadith possesses a sound isnād (chain of transmission), yet neither al-Bukhārī nor Muslim included it.

From Ṣāliḥ ibn Kaysān and others: ʿĀʾishah kept declaring, “ʿUthmān was murdered unjustly, and I call you to seek retribution for his blood and to restore the matter through shūrā (consultation).”

Hilāl ibn Khabbāb reported—from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās—that he said to al-Zubayr on the Day of the Camel: “Here is ʿĀʾishah handing authority to her kinsman Ṭalḥah, so why are you fighting your own kinsman ʿAlī?” Al-Zubayr then turned back, but Ibn Jurmuz met him and killed him.

I have already presented a concise account of the Battle of the Camel under the virtues of ʿAlī. On that occasion ʿAlī stood by ʿĀʾishah’s pavilion, reproaching her for setting out. She answered, “O son of Abī Ṭālib, malakta faʾsjiḥ⦗1⦘—now that you have prevailed, be gracious.” He provided her with provisions for the journey to Medina and granted her twelve thousand; may Allah be pleased with both of them.

In Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, through the route of Abū Ḥuṣayn⦗2⦘, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ziyād, from ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir, it is related that he heard him proclaim from the minbar: “Indeed she is the wife of our Prophet ﷺ in this world and the Hereafter”⦗3⦘—meaning ʿĀʾishah.

In Thābit’s wording the report states: “I testify by Allah that she is his wife.”

Shuʿbah related—from al-Ḥakam, from Abū Wāʾil—that he heard ʿAmmār say, when ʿAlī sent him to Kūfah to mobilize the people: “We certainly know that she is the Prophet’s ﷺ wife in this world and the Hereafter, but Allah is testing you through her so that you may follow either him or her.”⦗4⦘

(1) In other words: once one has the power to retaliate, pardoning becomes easy and more praiseworthy; this is a well-known proverb. (2) In the Damascus edition the reading is corrupt and appears as “Ibn.” (3) Reported by al-Bukhari, 13/47, in Kitab al-Fitan (Book of Trials), and by al-Tirmidhi, no. 3889, in Kitab al-Manaqib (Book of Merits). (4) Reported by al-Bukhari, 7/83, in Kitab al-Fada’il, chapter “The Merits of Aisha.”
