they had no water, so they prayed without ritual ablution. Thereupon Allah revealed the verse of tayammum (dry ablution). Usayd ibn Ḥuḍayr said to her, “May Allah reward you with goodness! By Allah, nothing ever befalls you that you dislike except that Allah brings about good for you through it.” It was transmitted by Ibn Numayr and ʿAlī ibn Mushir on his authority. (1)
Mālik narrated, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Qāsim, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
“We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of his journeys. When we reached al-Bayḍāʾ—or Dhāt al-Jaysh—my necklace broke. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stopped to search for it, and the people stayed with him, even though there was no water nearby.
The people went to Abū Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, and said, ‘Do you see what ʿĀʾishah has done? She has detained the Messenger of Allah and the people, and they are nowhere near a water source, nor do they have any water!’
She said, ‘So Abū Bakr reproached me, saying whatever Allah willed him to say, and he began prodding me in my side with his hand. The only thing that kept me from moving was the position of the Prophet ﷺ, whose head was on my thigh.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ slept until morning while there was still no water. Then Allah sent down the verse of tayammum, and the people performed dry ablution.
Usayd ibn Ḥuḍayr—one of the leaders—remarked, “This is not the first blessing that has come to us through you, O family of Abū Bakr.”
She continued, ‘We moved the camel I had been riding, and found the necklace beneath it.’ ” Agreed upon. (2)
