This ḥadith possesses a sound chain of transmission.
No clear, unequivocal text has reached us stating that the Prophet ﷺ saw Allah—exalted is He—with his physical eyes (1), and this is one of the matters about which a Muslim may remain silent without blame.
As for seeing Him in a dream, that is reported through numerous and widespread routes.
Regarding the direct vision of Allah in the Hereafter, that is a certainty; the texts on it are mass-transmitted. The collections of al-Dāraqutnī, al-Bayhaqī, and others gather these aḥādīth.
Abū al-Ḥasan al-Madāʾinī transmitted from Yazīd ibn ʿIyāḍ, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, who said:
ʿUyaynah ibn Ḥiṣn entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while ʿĀʾishah was with him—this was before the veil was prescribed—and he said, “Messenger of Allah, who is this ḥumayrāʾ?” He replied, “This is ʿĀʾishah, the daughter of Abū Bakr.” ʿUyaynah then said, “Shall I relinquish for you the most beautiful of women?” The Prophet answered, “No.” When he left, ʿĀʾishah asked, “Messenger of Allah, who was that?” He said, “That was the fool who, nonetheless, is obeyed among his people.”
This is a mursal ḥadith, Yazīd is abandoned (2), and ʿUyaynah did not accept Islam until after the revelation of the veil.
It has also been said that every ḥadith containing the phrase “O ḥumayrāʾ” is unauthentic (3), and the weakest among them is
