This report is transmitted through several routes from al-Zuhrī.
Hishām b. ʿUrwah also related it from his father.
Abū Maʿshar al-Sindī (1) said: “Aflah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mughīrah told me, on the authority of al-Zuhrī, who said:
‘I was in the presence of al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik … and he mentioned the incident of the Slander at length. In his narration he stated that it took place during the expedition of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq (2) and that the lots that were drawn were hers and that of Umm Salamah.’
Maʿmar likewise transmitted, from al-Zuhrī, that he said:
‘I was with al-Walīd when he remarked, “The one who took upon himself the major share of it was ʿAlī.” I responded, “No. Saʿīd, ʿUrwah, ʿAlqamah, and ʿUbayd Allāh have all informed me—each of them hearing ʿĀʾishah herself say—that the one who assumed the major share of it was ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy.” He then asked me, “What, then, was his crime?” I replied, “Glory be to Allah! Two men from your own people—Abū Salamah and Abū Bakr b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—related to me that they heard ʿĀʾishah say: ‘He behaved badly in my matter.’” (3)’
Yūnus b. Bukayr narrated—from Muḥammad b. Isḥāq—that ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr b. Ḥazm told me, from ʿAmrah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
‘When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the story that had been revealed …’
