Its isnād is singular.
It was also transmitted by ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Uwaysī, though al-Farawī’s version differs.
Al-Ḥākim related it in his al-Mustadrak, as did Muḥammad ibn Zuhayr al-Nasawī, from Abū Sahl ibn Ziyād, from Ismāʿīl al-Qāḍī.
Shuʿayb narrated—from al-Zuhrī—from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn—that al-Miswar informed him:
ʿAlī sought the hand of the daughter of Abū Jahl. When Fāṭimah heard of this she came and said: “Your people say that you never become angry for the sake of your daughters, and here is ʿAlī intending to marry the daughter of Abū Jahl.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then stood up; I heard him, after he had pronounced the tashahhud, say, “To proceed: I married (my daughter to) Abū al-ʿĀṣ ibn al-Rabīʿ and he spoke to me and was truthful to me. Fāṭimah is a part of me, and I dislike that she be subjected to temptation. By Allah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah and the daughter of the enemy of Allah shall never be gathered under one man.”
So ʿAlī abandoned the proposal. (1)
It was also narrated by al-Walīd ibn Kathīr; Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn Ḥalḥalah related to us—from al-Zuhrī—with similar wording, and in it occurs: “and I fear that she may be tempted in her religion.”
Ibn Isḥāq reported—from Ibn Qusayṭ—from Muḥammad ibn Usāmah—from his father:
The Prophet ﷺ was asked, “Which of the people is dearest to you?” He replied, “Fāṭimah.” (2)
It is also reported from Usāmah through another chain with the wording: “Which member of your household is dearest to you?”
