in Ramadan and was buried at al-Ḥajūn (1) at the age of sixty-five.
Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah related, through Wāʾil ibn Dāʾūd, from ʿAbd Allāh al-Bahī, who said:
ʿĀʾishah said, “Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned Khadījah he could scarcely tire of praising her and praying for her forgiveness. One day he mentioned her, and jealousy overcame me, so I said, ‘Allah has compensated you with that old woman!’ I saw that he became extremely angry, and I was overcome with remorse (2). I said to myself, ‘O Allah, if You remove Your Messenger’s anger from me, I will never again speak ill of her.’ When the Prophet ﷺ noticed what I was going through, he said, ‘What did you say? By Allah, she believed in me when the people rejected me; she sheltered me when the people abandoned me; from her I was granted children, whereas you have been deprived of them.’ She added, ‘For a whole month he went on mentioning her morning and evening (3).’
Al-Wāqidī said: “They left the ravine of Banū Hāshim three years before the Hijrah. Abū Ṭālib died then, and a month and five days before him Khadījah passed away.”
Al-Ḥākim said: “She died three days after Abū Ṭālib.”
Hishām ibn ʿUrwah related from his father, from ʿĀʾishah: “I was never jealous of any woman as I was jealous of Khadījah, because of how often I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention her, and he did not marry me until three years after her death.
Indeed, his Lord commanded him to give her glad tidings of a house in Paradise made of qasab (hollow pearls) (4)."
