Khalid al-Tahhan also transmitted it from Yazid, but he omitted al-Muttalib.
It is firmly established that on the Day of Hunayn, when the Muslims were in retreat, al-‘Abbas was holding the bridle of the Prophet’s mule ﷺ and stood his ground with him until divine help arrived (1).
Al-A‘mash narrated, from Abu Sabrah al-Nakha‘i, from Muhammad ibn Ka‘b al-Qurazi, from al-‘Abbas, who said:
“We would meet certain men of Quraysh while they were talking, and they would break off their conversation. We mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, ‘By Allah, faith will not enter a man’s heart until he loves you for Allah’s sake and because of my kinship with you (2).’”
Its isnad is broken.
Isrā’īl narrated, from ʿAbd al-A‘lā al-Thaʿlabī, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās:
“A man from the Ansar spoke ill of one of al-‘Abbas’s forefathers from the pre-Islamic era, so al-‘Abbas slapped him. His people came and said, ‘By Allah, we will slap him just as he slapped our man.’ They armed themselves, and when this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ he mounted the pulpit and said, ‘O people, which of the inhabitants of the earth are most honored by Allah?’ They replied, ‘You are.’ He said, ‘Indeed, al-‘Abbas is from me and I am from him. Do not revile our dead lest you harm our living.’ The people then came and said, ‘We seek refuge with Allah from your anger, O Messenger of Allah.’”
