alone, die alone, and be raised alone.’
They then dismounted, buried him, and ‘Abd Allah related to them his report—everything the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had told Abu Dharr when he journeyed by himself to Tabuk.⦗1⦘
From ‘Isa ibn ‘Umaylah:⦗2⦘ someone who had seen Abu Dharr told me that he would milk the little goat he owned and would begin with his neighbors and guests before taking any for himself.⦗3⦘
‘Asim al-Ahwal, on the authority of Abu ‘Uthman an-Nahdi, said: “I once saw Abu Dharr swaying on his mount while he was facing the sunrise. I assumed he was asleep, so I drew near and asked, ‘Are you asleep, Abu Dharr?’ He replied, ‘No, I was praying.’”⦗4⦘
11 – al-‘Abbas, the uncle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — * (ʿ)
It is reported that he accepted Islam before the Hijrah but kept his faith hidden. He went out with his people to Badr, was captured that day, and then claimed he had already been a Muslim. Allah knows best.
(1) Buraida ibn Sufyan is weak; the hadith’s documentation has already been given on p. 57, note 2.
(2) The manuscript reads “Umayla” (with the letter ʿayn), but no biographical entry could be found. It is most likely a scribal error; the correct name is ʿIsa ibn Numayla al-Fazari, whose biography appears in Tahdhib al-Kamal, no. 1086.
(3) Reported by Ibn Saʿd, 4/235, through the isnad of al-Waqidi.
(4) Reported by Ibn Saʿd, 4/236; all its transmitters are trustworthy.
