—I think he said they were from Kufa. They said, “Abu Dharr, this man has treated you so unjustly! Will you not raise a banner so that we may supply you with as many men as you wish?”
He replied, “People of Islam, do not propose that to me, and do not abase the ruler; for whoever abases the ruler, no repentance will avail him. By Allah, even if he were to crucify me upon the tallest beam or rope, I would listen and remain patient, and I regard that as better for me. (1)
Humayd ibn Hilal—on the authority of ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Samit—reported that Umm Dharr said, “By Allah, it was not Uthman who sent Abu Dharr—meaning to al-Rabadha; rather, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘When building reaches Salʿ, leave the city.’ ”
Ghalib al-Qattan asked al-Hasan, “Abu Saʿid, was it Uthman who expelled Abu Dharr?” He replied, “God forbid.”
Muhammad ibn ʿAmr—on the authority of ʿIraak ibn Malik—narrated that Abu Dharr said, “I shall be the one seated closest to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Resurrection, for I heard him say: ‘The nearest of you to me in seating will be the one who departs this world in the same state in which I left him.’ By Allah, there is not one of you who has not fastened onto something of it. Al-Maʿrur ibn Suwayd said, “We camped at al-Rabadha and found a man wearing a cloak, and his servant wearing one like it. We said, ‘If only you combined the two into a single fine garment for yourself and bought your servant something else!’ He replied, ‘Let me tell you: there was a dispute between me and a companion of mine—his mother was non-Arab—and I reviled…’ ”
