Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

if he has first discharged the right of Allah that is due on that wealth, then there is no blame upon him.

At this, Abu Dharr lifted his staff, struck Kaʿb, and said:
‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “I would not like to possess this whole mountain as gold, spend it all and have it accepted from me, and yet leave behind six awāq (about six ounces).”’

‘I adjure you by Allah, O ʿUthman: did you hear him say that repeatedly?’
‘Yes,’ ʿUthman replied. (1)

I say: This shows the superiority of spending and the dislike of hoarding; it does not indicate a formal prohibition.

Humayd ibn Hilal reported from ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Ṣāmit, who said:
‘I entered with Abu Dharr upon ʿUthman. When he came in, he uncovered his head and said, “By Allah, O Commander of the Believers, I am not one of them!”—meaning the Khārijites. Ibn Shawdhub added: their distinguishing mark is shaving the head.

ʿUthman said to him, “You have spoken the truth, Abu Dharr; we only summoned you so that you might live close to us in Medina.”

He replied, “I have no need of that; grant me permission to go to al-Rabadhah.”

ʿUthman said, “Very well, and we shall order some of the ṣadaqah camels to be placed at your disposal morning and evening.”

He answered, “I have no need of that; Abu Dharr’s little she-camel—ṣuraymah—is enough for him.” (2)

When he left he said, “Here you are, people of Quraysh—take your world, squeeze it dry (3), and leave us to our Lord.”

He (the narrator) continued: Abu Dharr then came in while ʿUthman was distributing wealth, with ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿAwf seated before him and Kaʿb present as well.

ʿUthman turned to Kaʿb and said, “Abu Ishaq, what do you say about someone who amasses…"

(1) Reported by Ahmad, al-Musnad, 1/63. The chain is weak because of the unreliability of Ibn Lahiʿa and the unknown status of Malik b. ʿAbd Allah. Ibn ʿAbd al-Hakam also cites it in Futuh Misr, p. 286, through Abu al-Aswad al-Nadr b. ʿAbd al-Jabbar from Ibn Lahiʿa. (2) al-suraymah (diminutive of al-sirmah) denotes a small herd of camels or sheep. (3) Meaning: “Take it!”; al-ʿadham refers to biting or eating roughly (verb pattern daraba). In the printed edition it was mistakenly read as fa-ightanimuha (“so seize it”).
