Al-Wāqidī transmitted, on the authority of Khālid ibn Ḥayyān, who said:
“Abū Dharr and Abū al-Dardāʾ used to sit beneath two goat-hair canopies in Damascus (1).”
Aḥmad ibn al-Barqī said, “Abū Dharr’s given name was Yazīd ibn Junādah.”
Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz said, “His name was Burayr.”
Abū Qilābah related—from a man of the ʿĀmir tribe—who said:
“I would camp far from water while traveling with my family, and I would occasionally fall into a state of janāba (major ritual impurity). This weighed on me, so Abū Dharr was recommended (2) to me. Later I performed the Hajj, and when I entered the mosque at Minā I recognized him: an elderly, wiry, dark-complexioned man clad in a Qatari cloak (3).”
…from Abu Dharr, from the Messenger of Allah, from Jibril, from Allah. He then added: “All the transmitters between me and Abu Dharr are Damascenes, and Abu Dharr himself entered Damascus.” This ḥadith therefore gathers many benefits.
Among them are the soundness of both its chain and its wording, the loftiness of its isnād, and the fact that it is entirely transmitted by Damascenes—may Allah ennoble and bless them.
It also contains a clear exposition of major principles in the fundamentals of religion, its practical rulings, refined etiquette, spiritual insights, and other matters—praise be to Allah.
We have been told that Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said, “The people of Syria possess nothing more honourable than this ḥadith.”
Aḥmad recorded it (Musnad 5/154, 177) as did al-Tirmidhī (no. 2495) through the route of Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ghanm, from Abu Dharr… Aḥmad also transmitted it (5/160) through Hammām, from Qatādah, from Abū Qilābah, from Abū Asmāʾ, from Abu Dharr…
(1) Ibn Saʿd, 2/236.
(2) In the printed edition the word has been corrupted to “fa-baʿatha”.
(3) Reported by Aḥmad in the Musnad (5/146). The “ʿĀmirī man” is ʿAmr ibn Bajdān, as explicitly named in other recensions. The adjective maʿrūq means “thin-fleshed”; in the Musnad it has been misprinted as maʿrūf. The term qaṭarī (qaf with kasra, tāʾ sukūn) refers to a reddish-striped Yemeni mantle whose stripes are somewhat coarse.
In this ḥadith the Prophet said to Abu Dharr: “The wholesome earth is a purifier as long as you do not find water, even for ten years; but when you find water, let it touch your skin.” The report is authentic: it was transmitted from Abu Dharr by Abū Dāwūd (nos. 332-333), al-Tirmidhī (124), al-Nasāʾī (1/171), and Aḥmad (5/147, 155, 180). Al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Ḥibbān (no. 126), and al-Ḥākim (1/176-177) all declared it ṣaḥīḥ, and al-Dhahabī concurred. A supporting chain is found in al-Bazzār from Abu Hurayra (no. 310) with a strong isnād.
