Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated to us, from Rabīʿah ibn Yazīd, from Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī, from Abū Dharr al-Ghifārī, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who reported from Gabriel, from Allah—Majestic and Exalted—that He said:
“O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden among you; therefore do not wrong one another.
O My servants, you commit sins by night and by day, and I forgive all sins; so seek forgiveness from Me and I shall forgive you.
O My servants, all of you are hungry except those whom I feed; so ask Me for food and I will feed you.
O My servants, all of you are unclothed except those whom I clothe; so ask Me for clothing and I will clothe you.
O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the humans of you and the jinn of you, to be as wicked as the most wicked heart among you, that would not diminish My dominion in the least.
O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the humans of you and the jinn of you, to be as devout as the most devout heart among you, that would not increase My dominion in the least.
O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the humans of you and the jinn of you, to stand together on one plain and ask of Me, and were I to give every one of them what he requested, that would not lessen what is with Me any more than the sea is diminished when a needle is dipped into it once.
O My servants, it is only your deeds that I record for you and then repay to you in full. Whoever finds good, let him praise Allah; and whoever finds other than that, let him blame no one but himself.”
Saʿīd said: Whenever Abū Idrīs related this ḥadith he would drop to his knees.
It was recorded by Muslim (1).
