Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

10 – Abū Dharr, Jundub ibn Junādah al-Ghifārī—may Allah be pleased with him.

He is also recorded as Jundub ibn Sakan; some say Burayr ibn Junādah, while others say Burayr ibn ʿAbd Allah.

Al-Dimyāṭī informed me that his full lineage is Jundub son of Junādah son of Sufyān son of ʿUbayd son of Ḥarām of the clan of Ghifār—the brother of Thaʿlabah—both sons of Mulayl son of Ḍamrah, brother of Layth and al-Dīl, the sons of Bakr, brother of Murrah, forefather of Mudlij son of Murrah, the two sons of ʿAbd Manāt son of Kinānah.

I say: He was among the earliest converts and one of the distinguished companions of Muhammad ﷺ. It is said that he was the fifth person to embrace Islam.

The Prophet ﷺ instructed him to return to his people’s homeland, where he stayed by the Prophet’s command. After the Prophet ﷺ migrated, Abū Dharr migrated to him, remained constantly in his company, and strove in battle alongside him.

During the caliphates of Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, and ʿUthmān he issued legal rulings.

Among those who transmitted from him are Ḥudhayfah ibn Asīd al-Ghifārī, Ibn ʿAbbās, Anas ibn Mālik, Ibn ʿUmar, Jubayr ibn Nufayr, Abū Muslim al-Khawlānī, Zayd ibn Wahb, Abū al-Aswad al-Duʾalī, Ribʿī ibn Ḥirāsh, al-Maʿrūr ibn Suwayd, Zir ibn Ḥubaysh, Abū Sālim al-Jayshānī Sufyān ibn Hāniʾ, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ghanm,
