Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Al-Ḥamīd ibn Abī Anas, through Ṣafwān ibn Sulaym, from Anas, related that he heard Ḥāṭib say:

He once looked in on the Prophet ﷺ during the Battle of Uhud. At that moment ʿAlī was holding the shield while the Prophet ﷺ was washing his face with water. Ḥāṭib asked, ‘Who has done this?’ ʿUtbah ibn Abī Waqqāṣ answered, ‘He smashed my face and cracked my incisor with a stone!’ I said, ‘I heard a caller on the mountain cry, “Muhammad has been killed!” so I hurried to you—my very soul seemed to have left me. Where has ʿUtbah gone?’ He pointed toward the direction he had taken.

I went after him, caught up with him, struck him with my sword, and severed his head. Then I dismounted, took his head, his spoils, and his horse, and brought them to the Prophet ﷺ. He granted them to me and prayed for me, saying, ‘May Allah be pleased with you,’ twice. (1)

The isnād is murky.

Al-Layth reports—through Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir—that a slave of Ḥāṭib once complained about him, saying, ‘O Prophet of Allah, he is surely bound for the Fire!’ The Prophet replied, ‘You lie. He will never enter it, for he fought at Badr and at al-Hudaybiyyah.’ Sound. (2)

Isḥāq ibn Rāshid—on the authority of al-Zuhri, from ʿUrwah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥāṭib—reported that his father once wrote a letter to the unbelievers of Quraysh. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ therefore summoned ʿAlī and al-Zubayr and said, ‘Set out until you overtake a woman carrying a letter; then bring it to me.’ They found her, demanded the letter, and told her that they would not leave until she had removed every garment she was wearing. She said, ‘Are you not Muslims?’ They answered, ‘Indeed we are; but the Messenger of Allah has informed us that you have it…’

(1) Harun ibn Yahya al-Hatabi: Al-Uqayli remarks in al-Duafa, p. 432, that “no one corroborates his hadith,” adding that Abu Rabiʿa is an unknown narrator. Al-Hakim also cites the report in al-Mustadrak, 3:300–301, without any comment from him or from al-Dhahabi, although elsewhere al-Dhahabi describes the chain as “obscure.” See likewise Lisan al-Mizan, 6:183.
