It was transmitted by ʿAbd al-Muʾmin ibn ʿAlī, from ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Ḥarb, from him.
Ismāʿīl, on the authority of Qays, said:
“I attended a funeral at which al-Ashʿath and Jarīr were present. Al-Ashʿath allowed Jarīr to go ahead and said, ‘This man never apostatized, whereas I did (1).’
Abū ʿUbayda said: “Al-Ashʿath commanded the right flank of ʿAlī’s army on the Day of Ṣiffīn.”
Maslamah ibn Muḥārib, reporting from Ḥarb ibn Khālid ibn Yazīd ibn Muʿāwiya, said:
“Muʿāwiya set out with ninety thousand men (2), reached the Euphrates before ʿAlī and encamped there. When ʿAlī arrived, Muʿāwiya denied his forces access to the water. ʿAlī therefore dispatched al-Ashʿath with two thousand men (3), while Muʿāwiya had posted Abū al-Aʿwar over the water with five thousand. A fierce battle broke out, and al-Ashʿath secured control of the water (4).”
Al-Aʿmash, on the authority of Ḥayyān Abū Saʿīd al-Taymī (5), said:
“Al-Ashʿath used to warn people against civil strife. Someone said to him, ‘Yet you went out with ʿAlī!’ He replied, ‘And where will you find a leader like ʿAlī? (6)’
Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim narrated:
“Al-Ashʿath once came in to ʿAlī about a certain matter and threatened him with death. ʿAlī said, ‘You threaten me with death? I do not care about it. Bring me the iron collar!’”
