Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

6 – Abū Burdah ibn Niyār ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd ibn ʿAmr ibn Kilāb ibn Duhmān al-Balawī (ʿ), of Qudaʿah stock, counted among the Anṣār by virtue of his alliance with the Aws.

His personal name was Hāniʾ.

He was the maternal uncle of al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib. (1)

He was present at the Pledge of al-ʿAqabah, at Badr, and in the other Prophetic expeditions.

He lived on into the era of Muʿāwiyah’s rule.

His reports are recorded in the Six Books.

Among those who transmitted from him were his nephew al-Barāʾ, Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, Bashīr ibn Yasār, and others.

= The second report states that, on the day of Badr, when the Prophet of God had prevailed, he ordered that a little more than twenty of the notables of Quraysh be cast into one of the wells of Badr … Recorded by al-Bukhari 7/234 and Muslim (2875). What al-Bukhari alone transmits is the hadith: “Drowsiness overcame us while we were standing in our ranks on the day of Uhud …,” reported by al-Bukhari 8/171 and cited above. Muslim’s exclusive narration is found in his Sahih 2/161, Book of Salam. Its wording is: Abu Talhah said, “We were sitting in the courtyards when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came upon us and said: ‘What is the matter with you and these majalis al-sa‘adat (gatherings on the elevated road-sides)? Avoid the majalis al-sa‘adat.’ We replied, ‘We are only sitting without any harm intended; we are reminiscing and talking.’ He said, ‘If you insist, then give it its due: lower the gaze, return the greeting, and speak kindly.’” (*) Musnad Ahmad 3/466; 4/44; Tarikh Ibn Ma‘in, no. 694; Tabaqat Ibn Sa‘d 3/451; Tabaqat Khalifah p. 80; Tarikh Khalifah p. 205; Al-Tarikh al-Kabir 8/227; Al-Ma‘arif pp. 149, 326; Al-Jarh wa-l-Ta‘dil 9/99-100; Al-Istiy‘ab 4/1608; Usd al-Ghabah 5/382; Tahdhib al-Kamal no. 1578; Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 12/19; Al-Isabah 11/34; Khulasat Tadhhib al-Kamal p. 443. I asked him, ‘Where are you going?’ He replied, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sent me to a man who married his father’s wife after him, and ordered me to strike off his head.’”
