by ʿAlī ibn Judʿān, from Anas, who said: “I informed the Messenger of Allah, and he replied, ‘Take it from your uncle.’ (1)
Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated—from Thābit and ʿAlī ibn Zayd—from Anas:
When Abū Ṭalḥah recited, ‘Go forth, whether light or heavy’ (Repentance 9:42), he declared, “Allah has summoned us and commanded us—both our elders and our youth. Equip me!”
His sons said, “May Allah have mercy on you! You campaigned in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and of Abū Bakr and ʿUmar; we shall go on your behalf now.”
Even so, he joined a sea-expedition, where he died. They could not find an island on which to bury him until seven days had passed, yet his body showed no change. (2)
He died in 34 AH, although Khalīfah alone said: 32 AH.
The ḥāfiẓ Abū Muḥammad told us: The Prophet ﷺ shaved one side of his head and distributed that hair among the people; then he shaved the other side and handed it to Abū Ṭalḥah. (3)
He added: Abū Ṭalḥah was strong, loud-voiced, of a brown complexion, medium in height, and he never dyed his grey hair. ʿUthmān led the funeral prayer for him.
Others said that he died in 51 AH.
He transmitted a little over twenty hadiths from the Prophet ﷺ, two of which are in the two Ṣaḥīḥs. Al-Bukhārī alone recorded one of them, and Muslim alone recorded one. (4)
