then he offered him his left side as well and said, “Shave.” When it had been shaved he handed that hair to Abū Ṭalḥah, who distributed it among the people (1).

Ibn ʿAwn also narrated the report from Muḥammad (2), but he transmitted it as an unattached (mursal) tradition.

Anas said: Abū Ṭalḥah owned more date-palm wealth in Madinah than any other man of the Helpers. He declared, “Messenger of Allah, the property I love most is Bayruḥā’. I now give it as charity for Allah’s sake, hoping for its reward and the treasure it will store up for me. Dispose of it, Messenger of Allah, wherever Allah shows you.” He replied, “Splendid! That is sound, profitable wealth. In my view you should distribute it among your nearest relatives (3).”

Ḥumayd narrated from Anas: After the Prophet ﷺ passed away, Abū Ṭalḥah never broke his fast except when travelling or ill (4).

Qatādah and Ḥumayd both narrated from Anas: Abū Ṭalḥah would eat hailstones while fasting and say, “They are neither food nor drink; they are simply a blessing.”

(1) Recorded by Muslim, Sahih no. 1305 (326), Book of Hajj, chapter “Clarifying the Sunnah on the Day of Nahr”; the wording includes: “He gave it to Abu Talha and said, ‘Distribute it among the people.’” (2) That is, Ibn Sirin. (3) Related by Malik, al-Muwattaʾ 2:995–996 (Book of Almsgiving, chapter: Encouragement to give charity); by Bukhari 3:257 (Book of Zakat, chapter: Charity to relatives), and also in the Books of Agency, Wills, Tafsir of surah Al ʿImran (3:92), and Drinks (drawing fresh water); by Muslim, Sahih no. 998 (Book of Zakat, chapter: The merit of spending and giving charity to one’s relatives and spouse); and by Abu Dawud 1689, Tirmidhi 3000, and Nasaʾi 6:231–232. The garden’s name Bayraha can be vocalized in several ways; Ibn al-Athir lists them all in al-Nihaya. The interjection bakh is an exclamation of admiration or approval. (4) Reported by Ibn Saʿd, al-Tabaqat 3:506, through the chain Yazid ibn Harun – Humayd – Anas; this isnad is sound. See also Siyar 2:3.
