Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

It was concerning him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared: “The voice of Abū Ṭalḥah on the battlefield is better than an entire contingent (1).”

His virtues are numerous.

Some maintained that he embarked on a campaign across the Byzantine Sea and died while at sea. The more widely accepted report, however, is that he died in Medina, and ‘Uthmān led the funeral prayer over him in the year 34 AH.

Ibn Abī ‘Arūbah—on the authority of Qatādah, from Anas—said:
“Abū Ṭalḥah, Mu‘ādh, and Abū ‘Ubaydah used to drink ṭilā’ in Syria, a beverage whose volume had been reduced by boiling until one-third remained and two-thirds had evaporated (2).”

I say: that is dibs (date molasses).

‘Urwah, Mūsā ibn ‘Uqbah, and Ibn Isḥāq further record that Abū Ṭalḥah was among those who pledged at al-‘Aqabah and fought at Badr.

(1) Reported by Ahmad, Musnad 3/203, through Yazid ibn Harun—Hammad ibn Salamah—Thabit—from Anas; its chain is sound. Ibn Saʿd also reports it in al-Tabaqat 3/505 through Sufyan—ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn ʿAqil—from Jabir, or from Anas ibn Malik, with the wording: “better than a thousand men.” The isnad is classed as good when supported by other routes. (2) Related by Abu Muslim al-Kajji, Saʿid ibn Mansur, and Ibn Abi Shaybah through Qatadah—from Anas—with an authentic chain. The word *tilaʾ* (grape molasses) refers to dibs, a thick syrup resembling the pitch used on camels; when grape juice is boiled until it stretches, it takes on that appearance and usually does not intoxicate. Malik records in the Muwatta, via Mahmud ibn Labid al-Ansari, that when ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab arrived in Syria the inhabitants complained of the land’s unhealthy climate and said, “Only this drink benefits us.” ʿUmar replied, “Drink honey.” They answered, “Honey does not help us.” A local man proposed: “Shall we prepare this drink so that it does not intoxicate?” ʿUmar agreed; they boiled it until two-thirds evaporated and one-third remained, then brought it to him. He dipped his finger into it, raised it, and the syrup stretched; he remarked, “This is *tilaʾ* like the pitch used on camels,” and allowed them to drink it, saying, “O Allah, I am not making lawful for them anything You have forbidden.” Ibn Hajar notes in Fath al-Bari 10/56 that Abu Musa and Abu al-Dardaʾ concurred with this ruling, as reported by al-Nasaʾi. The same position is transmitted from ʿAli, Abu Umamah, Khalid ibn al-Walid, and others (Ibn Abi Shaybah, etc.); among the Successors from Ibn al-Musayyib, al-Hasan, and ʿIkrimah; and among the jurists from al-Thawri, al-Layth, Malik, Ahmad, and the majority.
