his father and his paternal uncles, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, from Suhayb, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “I was shown the land to which you will emigrate: a saline plain lying between two black lava tracts. It will either be Hajar or Yathrib.” (1)
Suhayb added: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then set out for Madinah, and I had resolved (2) to leave with him, but some young men of Quraysh barred my way. That night I kept myself on my feet and never sat down. They said, ‘Allah has pre-occupied him with an abdominal ailment’—though I was suffering from nothing—so they fell asleep. I slipped away, but a number of them caught up with me at one postal stage (barīd) from Mecca.
“I said to them, ‘If I give you a number of ounces of gold will you let me go?’ They agreed, so I told them, ‘Dig beneath the threshold of the door (3); you will find it there. And take the two garments from So-and-so.’
“I then travelled on until I reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Qubā’. When he saw me he said, ‘Abū Yaḥyā, the bargain has profited!’—and he repeated it three times. I replied, ‘Only Gabriel could have informed you of this.’ ”
Hammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from Ibn al-Musayyib, who said:
“Suhayb set out as an emigrant and a group pursued him. He dismounted, emptied his quiver and said, ‘You know that I am one of the finest archers among you. By Allah, you will not reach me until I have shot every arrow I possess and then struck you with my sword. But if you wish, I will direct you to my wealth and you may let me go.’ They said, ‘We will do that.’
“When he came to the Prophet ﷺ, he said, ‘The bargain has indeed profited, Abū Yaḥyā!’ and the verse was revealed: ‘And among people is he who sells himself, seeking Allah’s good pleasure’ (al-Baqarah 2:207).” (4)
