Ibn Saʿd likewise listed him, tracing his pedigree back to Aslam ibn Aws ibn Manāh ibn al-Namir ibn Qāsiṭ, of the tribe of Rabīʿah—an ally of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Judʿān al-Taymī al-Qurashī.
His mother was Salmā bint Quʿayd.
He was a fair-skinned man, distinctly ruddy in complexion, and not tall.
Shabbāb (1) also linked his ancestry to al-Namir, though he added some forefathers and omitted others; Aḥmad ibn al-Barqī did the same.
Hamzah ibn Ṣuhayb relates from his father: “The Prophet ﷺ gave me the kunya Abū Yaḥyā” (2).
Ṣayfī ibn Ṣuhayb reports from his father: “I accompanied the Prophet ﷺ before revelation was sent down to him” (3).
Abū ʿUbaydah ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAmmār narrates from his father that ʿAmmār said: “I met Ṣuhayb at the door of the House of al-Arqam while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was inside. We entered; he presented Islam to us and we accepted it. We then stayed there the rest of that day until evening, after which we slipped out secretly” (4).
Yūnus transmitted from al-Ḥasan that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Ṣuhayb is the forerunner of the Byzantines” (5).
