until he was sure they were about to fling themselves into it. Then he shouted, “Stop! I was only joking with you.”

When they later arrived before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him what had happened, he said, “If someone orders you to commit a sin, do not obey him.” (1)

Abū Yaʿlā recorded this report in his Musnad. Ibn al-Munkadir also narrated it from ʿUmar ibn al-Ḥakam, but as a mursal (disconnected) transmission.

Thābit al-Bunānī narrated from Anas that the Prophet ﷺ once said, “Ask me anything.” A man inquired, “O Messenger of Allah, who is my father?” He replied, “Your father is Ḥudhāfah.” (2)

Amr b. Alqama – ʿUmar b. al-Hakam – Abu Saʿid al-Khudri. Al-Busayri, Zawaid, fol. 183, judged the isnad authentic. Al-Bukhari alluded to it in Sahih 8/46 (Book of Military Expeditions) under the heading “The detachment of ʿAbd Allah b. Hudhafa al-Sahmi and ʿAlqama b. Mujazziz al-Mudlaji.” See also: Tabaqat 2/163; Ibn Hisham 2/640; Sharh al-Mawahib 3/49–50. Al-Bukhari further records it in Sahih 8/191 (Tafsir); Muslim, no. 1834 (Book of Governance: chapter on the duty to obey leaders when no sin is involved); and Ahmad, no. 3124, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbas regarding the verse “Obey Allah, obey the Messenger, and those in authority among you,” saying that it was revealed about ʿAbd Allah b. Hudhafa b. Qays b. ʿAdi when the Prophet ﷺ sent him on an expedition. (2) Chain of transmission sound. Anas relates: the Prophet ﷺ came out when the sun had declined and prayed Dhuhr; after saying the salam he ascended the pulpit, spoke of the Hour and the grave events that will precede it, then said: “If anyone wishes to ask me about something, let him ask; by Allah, you will not ask me about anything but that I will inform you of it as long as I remain in this place.” Anas continues: the people wept profusely while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ repeated, “Ask me.” A man rose and said, “O Messenger of Allah, where will my entry be?” He replied, “In the Fire.” Then ʿAbd Allah b. Hudhafa stood up and asked, “Who is my father, O Messenger of Allah?” He answered, “Your father is Hudhafa.” The Prophet ﷺ went on repeating, “Ask me, ask me,” whereupon ʿUmar knelt on his knees and said, “We are content with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion, and with Muhammad ﷺ …
