Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān said: Thawr ibn Yazīd narrated to us, and Mālik ibn Shuraḥbīl narrated to us (1) and said:

‘Ubadah ibn al-Ṣāmit remarked, “Do you not see that I can rise only with the aid of a prop (2), and that I eat nothing except food that has been softened and warmed? My ‘companion’ died long ago—meaning his private part—and I would not like to be alone with a woman who is unlawful for me even if I possessed everything upon which the sun rises, for fear that Satan might come and stir it, even though it has neither hearing nor sight (3).”

Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh reported, on the authority of Ibn Khuthaym: Ismāʿīl ibn ʿUbayd ibn

= Al-Zuhri, through Abu Idris al-Khawlani, from Ubadah ibn al-Samit, related: “We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he said, ‘Pledge allegiance to me that you will not associate anything with Allah, will not commit fornication, will not steal, and will not kill a soul whose life Allah has made sacrosanct except with due right. Whoever among you keeps that pledge, his reward rests with Allah. Whoever commits any of those sins and is punished for it in this world, that punishment is an expiation for him. Whoever commits any of them and Allah conceals it, his case is left to Allah: if He wills, He pardons him; if He wills, He punishes him.’” Another version adds: “He then recited to us the verse from Surah al-Nisa,” while a third says: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ bound us by the same covenant that he bound the women.” See Fath al-Bari, 1/60, 65. Regarding the hadith “When you see the habitual praisers, throw dust in their faces,” it is reported by Muslim (no. 3002) in Kitab al-Zuhd, by Ahmad (6/5), al-Tirmidhi (2393), Ibn Majah (3742) and Abu Dawud (4804) via the narration of al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad; by Ahmad (2/94) through Ibn Umar; by Abu Ahmad al-Hakim in al-Kuna through Anas; and by al-Tabarani through Abd Allah ibn Amr. Al-Khattabi comments: “The maddehun (professional flatterers) are those who turn praising people into a livelihood, living off the one they praise and misleading him. As for someone who praises a man for a genuine good deed to encourage him and motivate others to emulate him, he is not counted among the maddehun, even though his words are praise.” Al-Miqdad applied the hadith literally, taking a handful of earth and casting it into the flatterer’s face. The report can also be understood figuratively: ‘dust’ stands for disappointment and deprivation—meaning, whoever approaches you with excessive praise should receive nothing from you. (1) In the printed edition the word was mistakenly written “bin.” (2) Al-rifd means “assistance,” i.e., he cannot stand without being helped.
