Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

the banner, O commander; allow us to carry it.’ Yet he refused, and he completed the expedition and returned still riding pillion behind that same man. (1)

Abū al-Malīḥ al-Raqqī narrated, through Ḥabīb, from Huzaym—or Hudhaym—who said:
‘I saw Salmān the Persian riding a bare donkey, wearing a sunbulānī shirt whose lower hem was tight. He had long shins, and the children were running behind him. I said to them, “Make way for the governor.” He said, “Leave them be, for good and evil lie in what comes after today.” (2)

Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, from Maysarah:
Whenever the Persians prostrated before Salmān, he would bow his own head and repeat, ‘I have humbled myself before Allah, I have humbled myself before Allah.’ (3)

Abū Nuʿaym reported: Yazīd ibn Mardānubah told us, from Khalīfah ibn Saʿīd al-Murādī, from his uncle, who said:
‘I saw Salmān on one of the roads of al-Madāʾin; a bundle of reed-mats jostled him and caused him pain, so he seized the owner’s upper arm, shook him, and then said, “You will not die until you witness the rule of the young.” (4)

Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim said: I heard an elder of Banū ʿAbs relate from his father, who said:
‘I went to the market and bought fodder for one dirham. I saw Salmān—though I did not recognise him—and I pressed him into service, loading the fodder onto him. As he passed a group of people they said, “Let us carry it for you, Abū ʿAbdillāh.” I asked, “Who is this man?” They replied, “This is Salmān, the Companion of the Messenger of Allah.” I said to him, “I did not know who you were; put it down.” But he refused until he reached the house. (3) ʿAtaʾ ibn al-Saʾib underwent ikhtilat (memory confusion) in his later years; Hammad heard from him both before and after this change. The remaining transmitters are trustworthy.
