ʿAffān narrated: Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān told us, from Thābit, who said:
ʿUmar wrote to Salmān saying, “Come and visit me.”
So Salmān set out, and when news of his arrival reached ʿUmar he said, “Let us go out to receive him.”
ʿUmar met him, embraced him, inquired about his affairs (1), and the two returned together.
Then ʿUmar said to him, “My brother, has anything reached you about me that you would disapprove of?”
He replied, “I have been informed that you place clarified butter and meat together on your table, and I have been told that you own two outfits: one you wear at home and another in which you go out.”
He said, “Is there anything besides this?”
He answered, “No.”
ʿUmar said, “You are relieved of this matter (3).”
Al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān records in his Musnad: Muḥammad ibn Bakkār al-Ṣayrafī (4) narrated to us; Ḥajjāj ibn Farrūkh (5) narrated to us; Ibn Jurayj narrated to us, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
Salmān returned from an absence, and ʿUmar went out to meet him, saying, “May Allah be pleased to have you as His servant.”
Salmān replied, “Then arrange a marriage for me.”
ʿUmar remained silent.
Salmān said, “You deem me suitable to be a servant of Allah, yet you do not deem me suitable for yourself?”
When morning came, some of ʿUmar’s people approached, intending to dismiss ʿUmar’s proposal, whereupon Salmān said,
“By Allah, it was neither his command nor his authority that moved me to this; rather, I thought: he is a righteous man—perhaps Allah will bring forth from us a righteous offspring.” (6)

Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān al-Wāsiṭī narrated to us: ʿUqbah ibn Abī al-Ṣaḥbāʾ narrated to us; Ibn Sīrīn narrated to us; ʿUbīdah al-Salmānī narrated:
Salmān passed by Ḥijr al-Madāʾin while on campaign. He was the commander of the army, yet he rode pillion behind a man from Kindah on a tethered mule.
His companions said, “Hand the standard over to us…"
