Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated, from Rabīʿah ibn Yazīd (1), from Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī, from Yazīd ibn ʿUmayrah (2), who said:
When death approached Muʿādh, we said, “Give us your parting advice.” He replied, “Seat me.” Then he said, “Faith and knowledge are in their appointed place; whoever seeks them will find them”—he repeated this three times—“so seek knowledge from four men: Abū al-Dardāʾ, Salmān, Ibn Masʿūd, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Salām, who had been a Jew and then embraced Islam, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘He is the tenth of ten who are in Paradise (3).’ ”
It was also narrated by al-Layth and his scribe from him.
Al-Madāʾinī reported that Salmān al-Fārisī said: “If I were to relate everything I know, they would say, ‘May Allah have mercy on the man who kills Salmān (4).’ ”
Maʿmar narrated from Qatādah:
There was a dispute between Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ and Salmān. Saʿd said, “State your lineage, O Salmān.” He replied, “I know of no father for myself in Islam; rather, I am Salmān, son of Islam.” When this reached ʿUmar, he met Saʿd and said, “State your lineage, O Saʿd.” Saʿd pleaded, “I ask you by Allah, O Commander of the Believers!” ʿUmar, who seemed aware of the matter, refused to let him go until he declared his ancestry. Then ʿUmar said, “Quraysh knows well that al-Khaṭṭāb was the most honored of them in the pre-Islamic era, and I am ʿUmar, son of Islam, brother of Salmān, son of Islam. By Allah, were it not for certain considerations I would have punished you. Do you not know that a man claimed descent through nine forefathers in the Days of Ignorance, and the tenth of them was in the Fire? (5)”
