other than you.”

They asked, “Messenger of Allah, who are those people?”

He struck the thigh of Salman the Persian and said, “This man and his people. Were the religion suspended at the Pleiades, men from among the Persians would reach up and grasp it.” (1)

Its chain of transmission is of middling reliability.

Wakīʿ narrated from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, who said:

When the Prophet ﷺ was told that Salman had said to Abū’l-Dardāʾ, “Your family has a right upon you,” he remarked, “May Salman’s mother be bereaved of him! He has indeed drawn widely from knowledge.” (2)

Shaybān reported from Qatādah regarding the verse, “And the one who possesses knowledge of the Scripture,” that he said: “It refers to Salman and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Salām.” (3)

(1) Reported by Abu Nuaym, Tarikh Isfahan, 1/2–3, through two chains—one via Muslim b. Khalid al-Zanji, the other via Abd Allah b. Jaʿfar al-Madani—both from al-Alaʾ b. Abd al-Rahman al-Harqi. Al-Bukhari also records it (nos. 4897–4898) in the Book of Tafsir, chapter on the verse “and others of them who have not yet joined them” (62:3), through Sulayman b. Bilal – Thawr – Abu l-Ghayth – Abu Hurayra: “We were sitting with the Prophet when Surah al-Jumuʿa was revealed …” After being asked three times “Who are they, Messenger of Allah?”—while Salman the Persian was present—the Prophet placed his hand on Salman and said: “If faith were at the Pleiades, men from these people would reach it.” Muslim transmits the wording “If religion were at the Pleiades, a man from Persia would seize it” (no. 2546, Book of the Merits of the Persians) through Yazid b. al-Asamm from Abu Hurayra, and al-Tirmidhi records it as well (no. 3307, Tafsir of Surah al-Jumuʿa). (2) Cited by al-Haythami, Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid, 9/343–344 (longer recension), who attributes it to al-Tabarani in the Awsat; also recorded by Ibn Saʿd, 4/1/60–61, through Abd Allah b. Numayr from al-Aʿmash. (3) Recorded by al-Tabari, Tafsir, 13/177; see also al-Suyuti, al-Dur al-Manthur, commentary on Surah al-Raʿd, v. 42.
