Al-Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ ibn Ḥayy, reporting from Abū Rabīʿah al-Baṣrī, from al-Ḥasan, from Anas, said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “Paradise longs for three men: ʿAlī, ʿAmmār, and Salmān.” (1)
Yaʿlā ibn ʿUbayd related that al-Aʿmash narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from Abū’l-Bakhtarī, who said:
Someone said to ʿAlī, “Tell us about the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ.”
He replied, “Which of them do you wish to ask about?”
They said, “ʿAbd Allāh.”
He answered, “He mastered the Quran and the Sunnah, then reached their limit; that alone suffices for knowledge.”
They asked, “ʿAmmār?”
He said, “A believer who forgets; if you remind him, he remembers.”
They asked, “Abū Dharr?”
He said, “He retained a knowledge beyond what he could bear.”
They asked, “Abū Mūsā?”
He said, “He was steeped in knowledge and then withdrew from it.”
They asked, “Ḥudhayfah?”
He said, “The Companion of Muhammad who knows the hypocrites best.”
They asked, “Salmān?”
He said, “He grasped the earliest knowledge and the latest; an ocean whose depth cannot be reached, and he is one of us—the People of the Household.”
They asked, “And you, O Commander of the Believers?”
He said, “Whenever I asked, I was given; and whenever I remained silent, I was prompted.” (2)
Muslim ibn Khālid al-Zanjī—and others—transmitted from al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān (3), from his father, from Abū Hurayrah:
The Prophet ﷺ recited the verse: “If you turn away, He will replace you with another people …”
