Its chain of transmission is sound.
Al-Bukhari recorded—through Sulayman (1) al-Taymi, from Abu ‘Uthman al-Nahdi, from Salman al-Farisi—who said:
“I was passed around by more than ten masters, from one master to the next.” (2)
Yahya al-Himmani narrated to us: Sharik related, from ‘Ubayd the scribe, from Abu al-Tufayl, from Salman, who said:
“I concluded a manumission contract, and the Prophet ﷺ helped me with an egg-sized piece of gold; had it been weighed against Mount Uhud, it would have outweighed it.” (3)
Hammad ibn Salamah reported to us: ‘Ali ibn Zayd related, from Abu ‘Uthman, from Salman, who said:
“I agreed with my owners that I would plant for them five hundred date seedlings; once they had taken root I would be free. The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘When you are ready to plant, inform me.’ So I told him, and he planted them with his own hand—every one except a single seedling that I planted. All of them took root except the one I had planted.” (4)
Qays ibn al-Rabi‘ narrated to us: Abu Hashim, from Zadhan, from Salman, who said:
“I read in the Torah that blessing descends upon performing ablution before a meal. I mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, ‘It descends upon ablution before the meal and upon ablution after it as well.’” (5)
…also transmitted through the line of Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz, from Ibn al-Asbahani, from Sharik, in an abridged form.
The qubaʿ (with damma on the qaf) is a large measure introduced by a man called Qubaʿ; the utensil was therefore named after him.
(1) In the printed edition the name “Sulayman” has been misread as “Salman”.
(2) Reported by al-Bukhari, no. 3946 (Book of the Merits of the Ansar, chapter: The Islam of Salman); by Abu Nuʿaym, Hilyat al-awliyaʾ 1/195; and by Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, al-Istiʿab 4/221.
(3) The isnad is weak because of Sharik’s unreliability; the report is also found in al-Tabarani’s al-Muʿjam al-kabir (no. 6072).
(4) The chain is weak owing to ʿAli ibn Zayd ibn Judʿan; see Ahmad 5/440 and Ibn Saʿd 4/1/57.
(5) Weak due to Qays ibn al-Rabiʿ. It is likewise transmitted by Ahmad 5/441; Abu Dawud, no. 3761 (Book of Foods, chapter: Washing the hands before eating); al-Tirmidhi, no. 1847 (Book of Foods, chapter: Ablution before and after a meal); and al-Hakim, al-Mustadrak 3/604—all through the route of Qays ibn al-Rabiʿ, from Abu Hashim al-Zamani, from Zadhan, from Salman—and by al-Tayalisi (no. 1674). Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Dhahabi, and al-ʿIraqi all deem it weak; cf. al-Hakim 4/106–107. In the printed text “Abu Hashim” has been corrupted to “Hisham.”
