of the Banū Sāʿidah. They then told them what the people had unanimously agreed upon and asked, “Where are you two headed?”
They answered, “We intend to see our brothers from the Anṣār.”
The two men replied, “You do not need to go near them—see to your own affair.”
Ibn Shihāb said: ʿUrwah informed me that the two were ʿUwaym ibn Saʿidah and Maʿn ibn ʿAdī (1).
It is also said that ʿUwaym was one of those about whom the verse was revealed: “Within it are men who love to purify themselves” (Q 9:108) (2).
Ibn Saʿd stated: ʿUwaym ibn Saʿidah died during the caliphate of ʿUmar when he was sixty-five years old (3).
I say: It is also reported that he originally belonged to the tribe of Balī.
(1) The chain of transmission is sound; Ibn Saʿd also records it, 3/2/31.
(2) Ahmad, 3/422, transmits—through the route of Husayn ibn Muhammad, from Abu Uways, from Shuraybil, from ʿUwaym ibn Saʿidah—that the latter related: the Prophet ﷺ came to them in the mosque of Qubaʾ and said: “Allah has spoken well of your concern for purity in the account of your mosque. What form of purification do you use?” They replied, “By Allah, Messenger of Allah, we know nothing except that we had Jewish neighbors who used to wash their backsides after defecation, so we washed as they did.” Ibn Khuzaymah, 1/45, declared the report sound, although Shuraybil ibn Saʿd was judged weak by Malik, Ibn Maʿin, and Abu Zurʿah, and only Ibn Hibban considered him reliable.
Al-Hakim, 1/155, also reports—through Muhammad ibn Shuʿayb ibn Shabur, from ʿUtbah ibn Abi Hakim, from Talhah ibn Nafiʿ—who said: Abu Ayyub, Jabir ibn ʿAbd Allah, and Anas ibn Malik—all from the Ansar—narrated from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding the verse, “In it are men who love to purify themselves, and Allah loves those who purify themselves.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “O company of the Ansar, Allah has praised you for your purification. What is this purification of yours?” They replied, “Messenger of Allah, we perform wuduʾ for prayer and ghusl for major ritual impurity.” He asked, “Is there anything beyond that?” They said, “No, except that when one of us leaves the latrine he prefers to cleanse himself with water.” He said, “That is it.” Al-Hakim graded it sound and al-Dhahabi concurred; the report corroborates the previous narration.
