—to follow you and to gain my share alongside you.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, “Do you believe in Allah and His Messenger?”
He replied, “No.”
The Prophet said, “Then turn back, for we do not seek assistance from a polytheist.”
He caught up with him again at al-Shajarah and repeated the same request.
A third time he caught up with him at al-Bayḍāʾ, whereupon the Prophet asked, “Do you believe in Allah and His Messenger?”
He answered, “Yes.”
The Prophet said, “Then proceed.” (1)
Al-Wāqidī said: He was Khubaib ibn Yasaf. His acceptance of Islam was delayed until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for Badr, whereupon he caught up with him, embraced Islam, and was present at Badr and at Uḥud.
He added: Khubaib died during the caliphate of ʿUthmān, and his line has died out. (2)
It is also said that his father’s name was Isāf ibn ʿAdī; that is how Ibn Abī Ḥātim recorded it.
Our shaykh al-Dimyāṭī (3) said: He is the one who killed Abū ʿUqbah al-Ḥārith ibn ʿĀmir. That, our shaykh maintained, corrects what appears in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī regarding the martyr Khubaib ibn ʿAdī, which states that he killed al-Ḥārith on the day of Badr and that al-Ḥārith’s clan killed him after taking him captive.
That Khubaib is Khubaib ibn ʿAdī ibn Mālik of the Aws, and I have not found him listed among the participants at Badr.
