and prostrated, then sat, supplicating and asking forgiveness. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Ask, and it will be granted to you." He then added, "Whoever would like to recite the Qur’an fresh, just as it was revealed, let him adopt the recitation of Ibn Umm ʿAbd." My companion and I realized that he was referring to ʿAbd Allah. When morning came I hurried to convey the good news to him, but he told me, "Abu Bakr has beaten you to it." I never competed with him in any good deed without his preceding me in it (1).
The same report was transmitted by Zāʾidah and others, from al-Aʿmash, on the authority of Ibrāhīm.
- ʿUtbah ibn Masʿūd al-Hudhalī*
He emigrated to Abyssinia.
His son ʿAbd Allah said: When my father died, Ibn Masʿūd wept and said, "My brother and companion alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the dearest of people to me—after ʿUmar" (2).
It was also said that when he passed away, ʿUmar waited for Umm ʿAbd; she arrived and performed the funeral prayer over him (3).
Al-Zuhrī remarked, "In our estimation, Ibn Masʿūd is no higher in rank than his brother ʿUtbah" (4).
I say: His son ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUtbah witnessed the prophetic era, attained Companionship, and narrated hadith. He was the father of one of the Seven Jurists, ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUtbah.
