Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Ibn al-Walīd said:
“I heard ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥujayrah relate from Ibn Masʿūd that, whenever he sat, he would say:
‘You are passing through the night and the day; your appointed terms are being shortened, and your deeds are being recorded, while death arrives all of a sudden. Whoever sows good will soon reap it in hopeful joy, and whoever sows evil will soon reap it in regret; every sower harvests what he has planted. The slow-paced will not be deprived of his allotted share, and the eager will never attain what has not been decreed for him. So whoever is granted good, it is Allah who granted it; and whoever is protected from evil, it is Allah who protected him. The God-fearing are the nobles, the jurists are the leaders, and keeping their company is an increase.’ (1)

Al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Khālid—reporting from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAbd Allah—said:
‘Be content with what Allah has apportioned for you and you will be among the richest of people. Avoid the forbidden and you will be among the most scrupulous of people. Fulfil what has been made obligatory upon you and you will be among the most devout of people.’

ʿAlī ibn al-Aqmar—through ʿAmr ibn Jundab, from Ibn Masʿūd—narrated that he said:
‘Strive against the hypocrites with your hands; if you cannot, then with your tongues; and if you can do no more than to scowl at them, then do so.’

Sayf ibn ʿUmar—transmitting from ʿAṭiyyah, from Abū Sayf—stated:
‘After ʿUmar died, Ibn Masʿūd stopped accepting his stipend, and a number of wealthy men from Kufa did the same. He bought an estate for himself in Rādhān (2) and died leaving ninety thousand gold dinars in addition to slaves, goods, and livestock—may Allah be pleased with him.’

Wakīʿ—through Abū ʿUmays, from ʿĀmir ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr—said:
‘Ibn Masʿūd left a written testament, saying: “My bequest is to Allah, to al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām, and to his son ʿAbd Allah ibn…’”
