the tongue of His Prophet (1)?
Al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān reported that Ibn Masʿūd would say in his supplication: “Fearful, seeking refuge; penitent, seeking forgiveness; hopeful, yet apprehensive.”
Al-Aʿmash—transmitting from someone who related it to him—said: ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿūd declared, “If I were to mock even a dog, I would fear becoming a dog myself; and I loathe to see a man idle, engaged in neither work for the Hereafter nor for this world.” (2)
Wakīʿ narrated to us: al-Masʿūdī, from ʿAlī ibn Badhīmah, from Qays ibn Ḥabtār, who said that ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿūd affirmed: “How excellent are the two things people find distasteful—death and poverty! By Allah, life is nothing but wealth and poverty, and I do not care with which of the two I begin. If it is poverty, it contains patience; if it is wealth, it contains compassion, for Allah’s due is obligatory in each of them.” (3)
Al-Thawrī—through Abū Qays, from Huzayl ibn Shuraḥbīl—narrated from ʿAbd Allah, who said: “Whoever seeks the Hereafter will harm his worldly life, and whoever seeks the world will harm his Hereafter. O people! So sacrifice (4) the perishing for the everlasting (5).”
Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Muqriʾ said: Ibn Abī Ayyūb Saʿīd narrated to us; he told me from ʿAbd Allah.
