Some narrators transmit the report through Manṣūr, saying: from al-Shaʿbī, from Masrūq. Other versions also exist.
Abū Wāʾil said, “I would not compare anyone to Ibn Masʿūd.”
ʿAbd Allah ibn Idrīs related—from Mālik ibn Mighwal—that al-Shaʿbī said, “No Companion who ever came to Kūfah brought knowledge more beneficial, nor was there a Companion more versed in jurisprudence, than ʿAbd Allah.”
With the chain found in the Musnad of Aḥmad: Yaḥyā ibn Abī Bukayr narrated to us; Israʾīl, from Abū Ḥuṣayn, from Yaḥyā ibn Waththāb, from Masrūq, who said: “One day ʿAbd Allah addressed us and said, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said…,’ whereupon he began to tremble so violently that even his clothes shook; then he concluded with words to that effect, or something similar.⦗2⦘”
ʿUbayd Allah ibn Mūsā also transmitted it from Israʾīl, but he substituted Ibn Waththāb with al-Shaʿbī.
A similar wording was reported by Muslim al-Baṭīn and others on the authority of ʿAmr ibn Maymūn.
Al-Qaʿnabī said: Sufyān narrated to us, from ʿAmmār al-Duhnī, from Muslim, from ʿAmr ibn Maymūn, who said: “I accompanied ʿAbd Allah for eighteen months, and I never heard him relate from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ more than a single ḥadith. I saw that he was fearful, then a spell of breathlessness overtook him, after which he uttered something to that effect, or something close to it.⦗3⦘”
Misʿar narrated, from Maʿn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from ʿAwn ibn ʿAbd Allah, from his brother ʿUbayd Allah, who said: “When people’s eyes grew heavy with sleep, ʿAbd Allah would rise, and I would hear from him a soft humming like the buzzing of bees.”⦗4⦘
