He also left behind, as part of his estate, Umm Ayman, five camels, and a flock of sheep, all of which the Prophet ﷺ inherited.

The Death of His Mother and His Guardianship by His Grandfather and Uncle

His mother, Āminah, died at al-Abwāʾ while returning with him ﷺ to Mecca after visiting his father’s maternal uncles, the Banū ʿAdī ibn al-Najjār. At that time he was six years and 100 days old; another opinion states that he was four years old. When she passed away and was buried, his bond-woman Umm Ayman carried him to Mecca and handed him over to his grandfather ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. The boy remained under his grandfather’s care until the latter died, when the Prophet ﷺ was eight years old, whereupon ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib entrusted him to his uncle Abū Ṭālib.

ʿAmr ibn ʿAwn said: Khālid ibn ʿAbd Allah narrated to us, from Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind, from ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Kundayr ibn Saʿīd, from his father, who said: “I performed pilgrimage in the Jāhiliyyah, and I saw a man circumambulating the House while chanting:
O Lord, return to me my rider, Muḥammad;
O Lord, return him and bestow on me Your favor.
I asked, ‘Who is this man?’ They said, ‘It is ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. Some of his camels had strayed, so he sent his grandson to look for them. Whenever he sent him on an errand he always succeeded, but this time he was delayed.’ I stayed there until Muḥammad ﷺ came back, driving the camels before him. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said, ‘My son, I have grieved over you so much—never leave my side again.’”

Khārijah ibn Muṣʿab narrated from Bahz ibn Ḥakīm ibn Muʿāwiyah ibn Ḥaydah, from his father, from his grandfather, that Ḥaydah ibn Muʿāwiyah performed ʿumrah in the Jāhiliyyah and related a report similar to that of Kundayr from his father.

Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad al-Shāfiʿī narrated from his father, from Abān ibn al-Walīd, from Abān ibn Taghlib, who said: Jalahmah ibn ʿArfaṭah told me, “I was at al-Qāʿ…”
