ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Harb reported, on the authority of al-Aʿmash, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, who said:
“I travelled to Syria and met Abū al-Dardāʾ. He remarked, ‘We used to regard ʿAbd Allah as a man of tender heart, so what has happened to him that he now confronts the governors?’”
This was transmitted by Ibn Abī Dāwūd in al-Maṣāḥif (1).
With two separate chains in Musnad Aḥmad: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿĀbis, who said:
“A man from Hamdān—one of ʿAbd Allah’s companions—told us:
‘When ʿAbd Allah resolved to go to Medina, he gathered his followers and said:
“By Allah, I hope there is among you this morning that which counts among the finest to be found in any army of the Muslims—in religion, knowledge of the Quran, and understanding of jurisprudence. This Quran was revealed upon various aḥruf (modes). By Allah, two men would disagree more sharply than they ever disagreed over anything, yet when the reciter declared, ‘This is how I was taught,’ the other would reply, ‘You have done well.’
It is no different from one of you saying to his companion, ‘Hurry up!’ and, ‘Welcome!’” (2)’”
Abū Muʿāwiyah related, from al-Aʿmash, from Zayd ibn Wahb, who said:
“When ʿUthmān sent for Ibn Masʿūd, ordering him to come to Medina, the people gathered around him and said, ‘Stay; do not leave. We will shield you so that nothing you dislike can reach you.’
He answered, ‘I owe him obedience. Besides, trials and discord are about to arise, and I do not wish to be the first to open that door.’
He then dismissed the people and set out to comply (3).
Muḥammad ibn Sanjar (4) records in his Musnad: ‘Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; ʿAbbād narrated…’
